Hyderabad: Rs 3 lakh recovered from chain snatcher

The police said that the accused Mohd Amer had surveyed 29 places in the city, and his arrested had prevented the robberies.

Hyderabad: A habitual offender involved in chain snatching and automobile theft along with his associate who was purchasing the stolen gold was arrested by the Central Crime Station sleuths of the Rachakonda commissionerate on Monday. Police recovered property worth Rs 3 lakh from them.

The police said that the accused Mohd Amer had surveyed 29 places in the city, and his arrested had prevented the robberies.

Amer, 26, a glass fitting worker from Chandrayangutta, was arrested first by the Chikkadpally police for 18 cases of snatching and booked under the PD Act. After release from jail, he snatched gold chains and was arrested twice by the Tukaramgate and Gandhinagar police.

“On September 11, Amer was released, but he resorted to five offences including a failed attempt to snatch the gold chain worn by a woman pedestrian at LB Nagar. Based on specific inputs, he was nabbed by the Central Crime Station sleuths. His associate Syed Taufiq, 30, who is into the gold business, was also apprended. Taufiq was arrested in nine cases for purchasing stolen gold ornaments,” said Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.

The commissioner said that the CCS team had recovered 29 gm of gold and six two-wheelers, all worth Rs 3 lakh from the duo. “Amer who is habituated to stealing had a conducted recce at 29 places in Rachakonda, Cyberabad and Hyderabad,” Mr Bhagwat said.

“He consumes alcohol before going for a recce and selects a spot which is not covered by CCTV cameras. He then steals a bike to use during the burglary. He sells the stolen gold to Toufiq who disposes of it,” said the commissioner.
