Chennai: One more held in 9 kg gold heist

A 5-member gang was found to be behind the heist.

Chennai: In a joint operation, Jaipur police and Chennai police picked up another person in Jaipur who may have had a hand in the stealing of 9 kg gold worth Rs 2.25 crore and Rs 2 lakh in cash from a jewellery-cum-pawn shop in Ayanavaram.

G. Deepak, an employee of the shop, was earlier held by the Rajasthan Police in Jaipur. The arrested was identified as Amaresh (25), a native of Rajasthan, who had travelled to Chennai to help the prime suspect, Deepak (21), who was employed in the shop on Somasundaram Street, Ayanavaram, and fled with the booty on September 3 when the owner of the shop, P. Goparam had gone to the Jain temple along with his family.

Based on a complaint from Goparam, special teams were formed and the Jaipur police were also alerted to look out for the suspects.

Following Deepak’s arrest, investigations revealed that the heist was the work of a 5-member team including Deepak, who had led from the front. As much as 2.5 kg of gold was recovered from Deepak following his arrest.

“The roles of Amaresh and three others were established and subsequently Amaresh was picked up. We have also launched a hunt to trace the rest while we are already in the process of taking custody of both Amaresh and Deepak,” the police said.

The duo is likely to be brought to the city in prisoner-in-transit warrant within a day or two. Further inquiries will be conducted once they are brought here and efforts will be taken to recover the remaining gold,” the police revealed.
