Telangana: Jailers accused of corruption

Marijuana is also available inside the prison if prisoners pay Rs 500 for 10 grams.

Hyderabad: Telangana Mahajana Samajam state convener and ex-Maoist Sriramula Srinivas alias Sudarshan, who was released on bail from Cherlapalli Central Prison on Tuesday, alleged that the prison had become a cesspool of corruption.

Speaking to the media at the Cherlapalli Central Prison he said that what the director general of Telangana prisons, Mr Vinoy Kumar Singh, was saying on jail reforms was completely false.

“Prison staffers are selling beedi packets at Rs 80 and local cigarettes at Rs 120. Those who pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 every month can keep mobile phones inside the prison. Marijuana is also available inside the prison if prisoners pay Rs 500 for 10 grams. Though the DG has issued a challenge to prove corruption in jails and has offered a reward of Rs 5,000 for it, there is no change at the Cherlapally Central Prison,” he said.

He said the government should allow remission for life convicts who had completed five years on October 2.

Sriramulu was arrested by Siddipet police last month from his house at Nagaram near Keesara in connection with an old case under the Arms Act. He had joined Naxals in 1990 and gave up Maoism in 2014. Sriramulu threatened one Ashok Reddy with a revolver.
