Chennai: 2 gangsters held on same day

During interrogation, police found out that it was Kaakathoppu' Balaji who had committed the robbery.

Chennai: The City Police arrested absconding gangsters ‘Kaakathoppu’ Balaji and ‘Sangili’ Ganesan on the same night at different places on Sunday.
‘Kaakathoppu’ Balaji (38), who has more than 40 cases including murder and extortion against him, was arrested last year and released on bail. Since then he had been absconding and police had launched a hunt for him.

D. Nesan (40) of Old Washermanpet was robbed of cash at knifepoint at Muthialpet on Sunday morning and Muthialpet police registered a case and were investigating. A few hours later, police, who were checking vehicles near Royapuram Old Bridge, tried to intercept a speeding two-wheeler, which sped past resulting in a chase and subsequent arrest.

During interrogation, police found out that it was ‘Kaakathoppu’ Balaji who had committed the robbery. The two-wheeler as well as two knives were seized from him and he was remanded in judicial custody.

Pulianthope police arrested another notorious history-sheeter ‘Sangili’ Ganesan and seized weapons from him. Ganesan, who has 26 cases pending against him including four murders, is the main accused in the 2013 murder of Vijay in Pulianthope.

While police were on the lookout for him in connection with several extortion complaints, they received a tip-off that he was camped in the locality along with his aide Santhosh Raja of T.P. Chathiram with the aim of murdering Vijay’s gang members. Police surrounded him on Saturday night and arrested ‘Sangili’ Ganesan, but Santhosh Raja managed to escape from the spot. “Vijay’s gang members had plotted to kill Ganesan and since he came to know of it, he decided to kill them,” a police source said.
