Telangana: Reversing school bus kills four-year-old girl

Driver had joined Adarsha Vidyalaya a month ago.

Hyderabad: Almost a week after a two-year-old boy was crushed by a school bus in Meerpet, a four-year-old girl was killed by a school bus on Saturday morning at AVS Reddy Colony.

The driver of the school bus, Mohd Hussain, was reversing the bus when the girl suddenly stepped behind the vehicle. The deceased, Kumari Manasa, was the daughter of Yellappa.

“The driver has been working with Adarsha Vidyalaya for a month now and he was found to have a valid driver’s licence and other documents,” said SI Venkat Reddy of Rajendranagar police.

The incident occurred at around 9 am when the girl and her mother were behind the school bus. “While the mother left the child and went to get water the girl went behind the bus which was reversing,” the SI added. The body of the girl was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem.

Based on a complaint by the girl’s father, Yellappa, a labourer, police booked a case under Section 304A (death through negligence) of IPC and took the driver into custody.

This is the second accident in recent times in the city in which a school bus has killed a child. Earlier this month, A 23-month-old toddler lost his life at Meerpet due to the negligence of a school driver.

Dongara Manish, alias Pandu, was following his mother who had gone to drop his elder sister at the van pickup point. After the girl boarded the bus the driver started the vehicle without noticing the child in front it. He ran over the child, killing him on the spot.

Transport authorities say that most accidents occur due to the absence of attendants inside buses. Parents allege that in spite of SC guidelines that there must be an attendant in every vehicle to ensure the safety of children many schools have failed to follow it.
