Chennai: 4 including 3 women held for abducting bizman for ransom

Family involved in several other similar incidents.

Chennai: Thirteen days after a gang abducted a businessman near Madhuranthagam, the Kancheepuram police arrested four persons including three women, on Thursday morning.

The arrested persons were identified as Gangadevi (50), her two daughters-in-law Victoria (29), Saranya (24) of Kottur-puram and car driver Sathish (28) of Arapakkam near Padappai. The police also launched a hunt to nab Gangadevi's son Gnanasekaran, Anith Kumar, Ravi, Suresh and Elumalai.

The gang had abducted M. Muthukumar (60) of Pillaiyar Kuppam in Puducherry on June 30 near Pakkam, when he was going to his home in his car.

“The gang stopped his car and abducted him in knifepoint. They also called Muthukumar's relative Balachandar and demanded '15 lakh ransom for his release. The family handed over '10 lakh after which the gang abandoned Muthukumar and car in separate locations,” the police said.

The Kancheepuram police registered a case and formed a special team to nab the gang. Meanwhile, police also have been tracing mobile phone signals received in the locality and zeroed in on Sathish. “We were continuously keeping an eye on Sathish and based on a tip-off, a vehicle check was conducted on Vedanthangal - Madhuranthagam road on Thursday early morning,” the police said. Police stopped a car and found Sathish, Gangadevi, Victoria and Saranya. In his confession, Sathish had reportedly told the police that Gangadevi’s son and Victoria and Saranya’s husband Gnanasekaran (28) hatched the plan to abduct Muthukumar. “Sathish also said that family has been in the ‘business’ for long and committed many crimes. Based on the confession, all the four arrested persons were sent to judicial remand. Sathish was a carpenter before entangling with Gnanasekaran and his family” the police added.The police said that the ransom money would only be recovered after the arrest of main accused Gnanasekaran.
