Bid to mislead probe on GNPC
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police and excise officials are suspecting a bid to mislead the probe into the Facebook (FB) group 'Glassile Nuruayum Platile Curriyum' (GNPC) as couple of FB groups with the same name and even same logo surfaced over the last couple of days.
According to excise and police sources, it could be a bid to mislead the probe as the key administrator of the GNPC group, Ajith Kumar, against whom cases were initiated, was claiming that the illegal activities were being initiated by fake groups.
"We suspect that the new GNPC groups that surfaced over the last few days could be a ploy to support the claim of the accused that there were many groups with the same name and logo," an excise official said.
Meanwhile, the excise team led by range inspector C P Praveen probing the case got basic details of 38 administrators of the group and efforts were on with the help of cyber experts to extract more information about them. All of them seem to be Malayalis, but majority seems to be NRKs, said excise sources.
The excise also got details of transactions of one of the accounts of Ajith and were trying to analyse the details. "There was considerable transactions in the account that was created in January. But the actual quantum needs to be ascertained. We also suspect that the accused could be transacting through other benami accounts also," said excise sources.
Meanwhile, FB authorities declined a request of the city police to block the page. "The FB authorities cited technical and legal restrictions in blocking the page at this point. But they would be sharing the information we sought. We will try to track the administrators and book them so that the page would become inactive in due course," city police commissioner P Prakash said.
