Woman kills kid, ends life in Hyderabad

Since a month the harassment increased and the couple started fighting regularly.

Hyderabad: Troubled by the alleged dowry harassment of her husband and in-laws, a 21-year-old housewife killed her daughter and later committed suicide in Nalgonda. Police said that N. Mamata threw her child into an underground sump in their house and then set herself ablaze while her husband and in-laws were sleeping.

N. Mamata, 21, a commerce graduate from Choutuppal in Nalgonda district married Bhaskar, a JCB machine operator from Bhongir two years ago and they had a six-month-old daughter named Bunny, police said.

Before the marriage, Mamata's family agreed on Rs 7.5 lakh dowry and gave Rs 7 lakh. After marriage, Bhaskar and her parents started harassing Mamata for the balance and more dowry. Bhaskar, who is an alcohol addict, stopped working a few months ago and recently joined a glass manufacturing company.

Since a month the harassment increased and the couple started fighting regularly. Two days ago, Mamata went to her relative's house at Ghousenagar, called her parents and told them about the harassment. The parents told her that they wil give the money soon.

On Saturday night, Bhaskar came home drunk and started a quarrel with Mamata. “Around 2.30 am she threw the child into the sump and later set herself ablaze using kerosene. Her husband and in-laws were sleeping when this happened,” inspector D. Arjunaiah said.

Mamata died in hospital and after a couple of hours her family said the child’s body was retrieved in the 10 feet deep sump.

A case of dowry harassment was registered and a hunt is on for Bhaskar and his parents.
