Hyderabad: Some residents of Banjara Hills were cheated of around Rs 2.5 crore by a couple who promised them high income returns from villas at Vizag, in which Tollywood stars had also invested. The couple collected cash and jewellery from the victims and went missing.
Police said that S. Lalitha and her husband Srivastava, residents of Sitaphalmandi, approached some women on Banjara Hills Road #13 and promised them high returns if they invested in villas at Vizag.
The couple collected around Rs 2.5 crore from around 10 women. While some of them paid around Rs 2 lakh each one woman paid Rs 25 lakh and gold jewellery worth around Rs 4 lakh.
The victims who realised that they had been cheated, approached the police commissioner and also lodged a complaint with the Banjara Hills police. “We have registered a case and have started investigation. Based on the outcome we will proceed,” said an official from the Banjara Hills police station.
On inquiry, police found that the couple cheated the victims with mesmerising words and spent the money on luxuries and mortgaged the jewellery. Special teams have been formed to nab the absconding couple.
