Hyderabad: A woman committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling at her house in Malkajgiri on Sunday, the motive, according to the police, being the violence she was subjected to by her husband and in-laws.

The police have registered a case against the husband, an employee of an IT firm, his parents, and sister for abetment to suicide and domestic violence.

According to the Malkajgiri police, S Sunitha (35), a resident of Hanumanpet, was married to Akash Rao, a software engineer, about 14 years ago. The couple got married without the consent of Akash’s parents and had two children.

For the last few years, Akash has reportedly become aggressive towards Sunitha and used to harass her for petty issues and did not give her money for her personal expenses and to run the house. His parents wanted him to divorce Sunitha and marry another woman, said the police.

A few days ago, Sunitha, who was unable to bear the harassment, according to her mother, lodged a complaint with the Malkajgiri police. Several attempts were made by elders from both the families to counsel the couple. However, the harassment did not stop, and Akash allegedly developed intimacy with another woman and demanded a divorce, said Sunitha's mother Seethamma in her complaint to the Malkajgiri police.

On Sunday morning Seethamma received a call from Akash to say that Sunitha had hanged herself and was dead.

Based on her complaint, a case under sections 498A and 306 of the India Penal Code has been registered against Akash Rao, his parents and sister after a post-mortem examination at Gandhi Hospital, said Malkajgiri police.
