Woman ends life, leaves behind video of torture

In the video, she accused her husband and other family members of harassing her for dowry.

Hyderabad: A 20-year-old woman committed suicide at her home in Balapur on Wednesday after recording a video on her mobile phone. In the video, she accused her husband and other family members of harassing her for dowry.

The woman, identified as Anjum Faizan, was married to Arif alias Irfan, a resident of Yakutpura, in the second week of January. Sub-Inspector of Pahadi Shareef Police, M. Sudhakar, said: “Arif's family used to torture her mentally and physically on a daily basis. She was asked to get a vehicle and other appliances from her parents all the time. After a quarrel, the husband used to drop her to her parents’ house. This had been happening for the past three months.”

Anjum came to her parents’ house in Balapur 10 days ago and informed them about the harassment by her husband, mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Assistant Commissioner of Police of Vanasthalipuram Division, V. Ravinder Reddy, said: “On Tuesday evening, she recorded a video of herself on her phone stating that she was being harassed by her husband and in-laws. She asked her parents to forgive her and hanged herself in the bathroom.”

Her mother got suspicious when she did not come out for a long time and raised an alarm. “With the help of neighbours, they broke the door and found her. They rushed her to a hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead,” Mr Reddy said. Pahadi Shareef police has booked a case against the husband and his family under Section 304B (dowry death) of IPC. Police officials are tracking the absconding family.
