Man held with cash ahead of polling day
VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam police on Sunday arrested a man in possession of cash meant for distribution to electors in the city area.
MVP Colony police station circle inspector H. Malleswara Rao said local people and activists of Telugu Desam in Simhadripuram caught hold of Pilli Eswara Rao, who had been moving in the area distributing money to voters.
Police arrived on the scene and took Eswara Rao into custody. They seized ₹83,000 from his possession. Police also found a list of voters in his pocket.
Eswara Rao reportedly confessed to police that he had been carrying money for distribution to voters. But he did not disclose which contesting candidate had entrusted him the job.
The CI said a case has been registered against Eswara Rao under section 171 of IPC and section 123 of the Representation of the People’s Act. The accused will be produced in court on Monday.
Rumours also did rounds saying some leaders are distributing silver coins. However, they disappeared by the time police and RDO arrived. No case has been filed in this instance.
