Krishnagiri cops stop orphaned girl's forced early marriage
Krishnagiri: Acting on a tip off, the Krishnagiri superintendent of police K.Thirunavukarasu has saved an orphan girl who was forced into early marriage on Friday.
The operation began with the SMS received by the police officer from a whistle blower who informed about the marriage of the 17-year-old girl with 40-year-old groom.
Thirunavukarasu immediately formed a team to trace the place because the informer was unable to give details of the temple where the marriage was to be solomenised.
Around 6 am, the police officials went to Aavalnatham Murugan temple in Krishnagiri and stopped the marriage just few minutes before the groom could tie the ‘thaali’ on the victim.
But, the police were in tenterhook as they could not file the case because the girl claimed that she was 18-years-old. However, the girl was unable to produce documents in support of her claim.
She was handed over to the district child welfare committee officer who will conduct probe to find out the truth in her claim. Meanwhile, the girl was sent to the government home.
The hapless girl, who lost her parents at a tender age, was taken care of by her relative Mrs Basaamma, 55, of Ponnalnatham village, near Shoolagiri in Krishnagiri district.
Investigations revealed that the marriage to the girl was fixed with G.Balasubramani, 40, of Anthiyur in Erode district. The man who was already married twice was introduced to the girl’s relative by the brokers Ramesh, 55, and Ellammal, 45, both native of her village.
It was alleged that Balasubramani had paid Rs 65,000 to the brokers and of which 50 per cent was given to the girl’s relative. The Krishnagiri police when contacted said they are yet to register a case as the investigations are on.
