IPMS College of Aviation principal held for girl's suicide attempt

Deepa was taken into custody from Coimbatore where she had gone hiding after the case was registered on Dec.4.

Malappuram: The Kondotty police on Monday arrested Deepa Manikandan, principal of IPMS College of Aviation in Thiruvananthapuram, in connection with the suicide attempt of a student at Karipur in Malappuram last week. Deepa was taken into custody on Sunday night by a special team from Coimbatore, where she had gone hiding after the case was registered on December 4. She was slapped with several charges for abetting the crime and helping the accused students.

The girl student hailing from Thiruvananthapuram had attempted to commit suicide by jumping from atop a lodge at Karipur near Calicut international airport after she was repeatedly harassed by her classmates by calling her caste name. They were staying in the lodge while undergoing training at the airport. The police had arrested five of her classmates, Neethu, 19, Athira, 19, Shaija, 19, Vaishnavi, 19, and Shalu, 19, on December 7. They were slapped with charges, including provisions under the SC and ST (prevention of atrocities) Act.
