Men with country bombs held near Kovalam
CHENNAI: Police seized four country made bombs brought from Puducherry and three sickles from passengers of a car at Kovalam early on Thursday morning. They arrested six persons who were allegedly planning to extort money by threatening councillors and businessmen to fund the court battle of suspects jailed for the murder of Hindu Munnani leader Suresh Kumar at Ambattur in 2014.
The arrested were identified as Suresh (25), a history sheeter from Semmanchery, Ansari (22), Ashiq Ahamed (23), Abdul Sayed (23) and Shahul Hameed (24), all from Padi who are believed to be associates of Abu Tahir, the main suspect in the murder case. The sixth person was identified as Radhakrishan, who provided logistics for others.
A detailed enquiry by police revealed that Suresh, who had been in Puzhal jail under preventive detention, had come in contact with Abu Tahir while in prison. “Hindu Munnani leader Suresh Kumar murder suspect Abu Tahir and Jaffer had sought Suresh’s help to procure bombs and sickles from Puducherry. Suresh went to Puducherry by bus and procured bombs from Abu Tahir’s contact and returned in a bus with explosives in a bucket full of maida flour, police said. His associates were waiting for him in a car at Kovalam and Suresh handed over the bombs to them.
