Couple succumb to burns from suicide bid
Chennai: A couple who tried to commit suicide in Kodambakkam succumbed at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH), where they had been admitted for treatment of the burns they sustained in their suicide bid. Sources said Rafiya Dul Basariya (30) and her husband Rajesh aka Gandheeswaran (37), residents of Sriji Apartment, Circular Road, Kodambakkam, fought with each other on Wednesday around noon.
The latter, doused in kerosene, threatened to kill himself if she did not let the issue pass without bickering. Reportedly enraged, the woman doused herself in kerosene and set herself afire. The man leaped to save her and suffered burns in the process. The woman succumbed on Wednesday night and Rajesh died in the small hours of Thursday. Investigations revealed Rafiya and Rajesh married six years ago after Rafiya’s previous marriage had fallen through. Rajesh has a stepchild besides a child he fathered through her from this marriage.
The couple had been constantly fighting with each other for the past two months and their neighbours had also warned the couple to keep it under wraps and not to disturb the others. Kodambakkam police have registered a case and are investigating. Man takes his own life In another incident, a 35-year-old employee at the Government Central Press may have taken the drastic step of committing suicide due to depression. The deceased, identified as D. Krishnamoorthy, was upset since he was not able to get married and had become a compulsive alcoholic. He was found hanging from the ceiling of his house in B-block of his official quarters. New Washermanpet Police have registered a case.
