Chennai: Customer' steals 40 gold sovereigns from shop

Chennai: A man deceived a couple and stole 40 sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 50,000 from a shop, on Thursday night. According to police, Shanthi and her husband Periyasami are running household vessels shop at West Kalmandapam in Royapuram. They also reside on the first floor of the building, where the shop is located.

“On Thursday night, the couple was about the leave for Yercaud. To hand over the jewels and cash to Shanthi's mother for safe-keeping, they had brought the valuables with the baggage downstairs,” the police said.

When they were about to close the doors, a man entered the shop on the pretext of buying vessels. The couple was showing the vessels to the man but the man left the shop without buying any. “After the man left, the couple found the jewel and cash bag kept on the table missing,” the police said. Based on the complaint from Shanthi, Royapuram police have registered a case. Police also have taken CCTV grabs from the cameras fixed on the locality to nab culprit.
