Artificial limbs to be distributed in North Andhra

The largest artificial limb-fitting organisation in the world had been serving the needs of physically-challenged persons since 1975.

Visakhapatnam: After a gap of several years, Jaipur-based Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti is conducting a camp for free distribution of artificial limbs and other prosthetic appliances at the TTD Kalyana Mandapam in Vizag from March 24 to 28.

With the financial support from ONGC, the non-profit organisation will hold a camp for distribution of artificial limbs, callipers, crutches, wheelchairs and other aids to patients coming from Vizag, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.

The largest artificial limb-fitting organisation in the world had been serving the needs of physically-challenged persons since 1975. It has a branch in King Koti Government Hospital in Hyderabad. This branch has been holding camps in different districts of AP since 2003.

The Samiti was unable to organise regular camps in North Coastal area post bifurcation of the state. Former bureaucrat and a patron of the organisation P.C. Parakh initiated this camp by consulting the district collectors of the region. He expects a large turnout of physically-challenged persons from North Andhra with active participation of department of disabled welfare and agencies like Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and SERP.

“These agencies give publicity and bring patients to the camp site. We will bring all raw material, components and equipment to set up the workshop for fabrication of the appliances and required number of technicians from Hyderabad,” Mr Parakh informed.

“Artificial limbs are custom-made for each individual and they are delivered on the same day or at best the second day,” he added.
