Man commits suicide outside AP Bhavan in Delhi

Davala Arjun Rao was a resident of Kinthali in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

Vijayawada: A differently-abled man from Andhra Pradesh, who was facing a financial crisis, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison outside AP Bhavan in Delhi, police said on Monday.

Davala Arjun Rao was a resident of Kinthali in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. He had come to Delhi to participate in the day-long hunger strike by AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Police said the incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

Claiming that Arjun Rao had committed suicide demanding Special Category Status, Mr Naidu announced Rs 20 lakh ex gratia to the deceased family. He said Rao would get a state funeral. Rao was found dead on a wheelchair and a suicide note written in Telugu was recovered from the spot, DCP, New Delhi, Madhur Verma said. Rao cited financial crisis as the reason for taking such an extreme step.
