Chennai: 11 bikers beat traffic cop for doing his job

In wee hours of Monday 11 youngsters on 5 bikes were driving in a rash manner to Nungabakkam.

Chennai: A police constable was allegedly attacked by a 11-member gang in wee hours of Monday for stopping a bike with a lathi and injuring the motorist.

According to police, Murugan (30), a grade II constable, and head constable Karunakaran attached to the Chetpet police station were posted on patrol duty near the Dr Guruswamy Bridge on Saturday night.

In the early hours of Monday, the two police personnel saw 11 youngsters on five motorbikes driving very fast towards Nungambakkam. Karu-

-nakaran and Murugan attempted to stop the vehicles but could not do so. When the last motorbike arrived, Murugan hit the vehicle with his lathi in an attempt to stop the motorist, the police said.

The lathi hit the side mirror and then the driver’s face. In the confusion, three men on the bike lost balance and hit a barricade on the road. Irked by that, all the 11 men returned and allegedly attacked constable Murugan injuring his shoulders and face. Murugan was taken to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he is being treated, police sources said.

Murugan and Karunakaran told the police that the men were drunk. Meanwhile, the injured man was identified as Ajay Kumar from Ayanavaram. He was treated at the Rajiv Gandhi Medical College and Hospital alleging that he was attacked by the police.

Murugan lodged a complaint at the Chetpet police station and further investigations are on. Chetpet police have collected the CCTV footage of the road and are searching for the men.
