Chennai: Drunk man kills wife and child

4-year-old daughter is battling for life.

Chennai: A drunk 30-year-old-man clubbed his 26-year-old wife and their 10-month-old-son to death, besides leaving his 4-year-old daughter badly injured, in Semmanchery in the early hours of Saturday. He suspected his wife’s fidelity, The woman identified as Ruth and her husband Baskar worked in the housekeeping division of a private educational institution on Old Mahabalipuram Road at Sholinganallur.

Police identified their deceased son as Raja and the injured daughter as Jennifer. On Friday night, Baskar came home drunk, picked up a wooden log and began indiscriminately beating his wife and children. After the rampage, he went to his neighbour’s house and told him that he had beaten up his wife. The neighbour rushed to Baskar’s house to find the woman and baby dead, and the girl battling for life.

Earlier on Friday morning, Baskar who came home after work reportedly caught his wife red-handedly with another man. A rattled Ruth picked up her baby boy and fled the house along with her lover, sensing trouble from Baskar.

The neighbour also alerted Semmenchery police and 108 Ambulance service. The injured child was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Police moved the corpses to the Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy. A case was registered by Semmenchery police who took Baskar into custody.

He confessed to the crime during interrogation and was remanded to judicial custody by a court here to be lodged in Puzhal Prison. It is learnt that the couple had another daughter living with her maternal grandmother elsewhere. The couple had moved to Chennai five years ago from Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh and was residing on Gangai Amman Koil Street, Semmanchery.
