Group clashes spark tension in Sunday market

Nellore: Tension situation prevailed at the Sunday market here following clashes between two groups during the opening of a shop on Monday. Two CPI(M) activists suffered injuries in the incident. Police restored calm.

Alleged highhanded behaviour of a CPIM activist, who occupied the shop in the market by ignoring the orders of the police resulted in the group fight.

According to locals, CPIM leaders led by city party secretary Kathi Srinivasulu and another leader Nageswara Rao came to the Sunday market for the opening ceremony of Shop-70. There were heated arguments between CPIM leaders and members of the Nellore City Road Margin Vendors Welfare Association.

A scuffle broke out between the two groups.

Road Margin Vendors Welfare Association functionaries Md Hafiuddin and R Senthil Kumar said the CPIM leaders Nageswara Rao and Kathi Srinivasulu and nearly 100 party activists entered the market and tried to create disturbance.

“The CPIM leaders are supporting a few vendors who have left our association. They are trying to disturb peace in the market,” said the association leaders.

CPIM leaders blamed the association leader Jasthi Kishore Babu for “maintaining a mafia” in the Sunday market. They alleged that Kishore resorted to attacks on many vendors in the past.

Meanwhile, police deployment was made at the Sunday market to prevent any fresh incidents.
