WhatsApp shock for teen: Parents asked to pay Rs 32 lakhs

Accused sent obscene photos from different nos.

Bengaluru: A teenage girl was blackmailed by a person, who has sent her objectionable photos on WhatsApp and has demanded Rs 32 lakh, failing which he threatened to upload them on various social networking sites.

Seeking action against the culprit, the girl’s father, a 44-yrear-old businessman, had approached the police and filed a formal complaint.

He has stated that his daughter, a student, received a Whatsapp message from an unknown person a few days ago.

The message had the girl’s objectionable photos and the sender demanded money for not sharing the photos.

Following this, the girl blocked that particular phone number.

But, the accused sent a text message to her mother stating, “If you block me on WhatsApp and Facebook, the photos will be uploaded in websites. See what I will do.”

After a week, the girl got a message again from another mobile number stating, “You played with me. Now see FB post. If you again block this number I will inform your parents.” The message also threatened the girl with dire consequences.

“It appears that someone known to the girl or her family members are behind the act, as the miscreant has also got the phone number of the girl’s mother and texting her thinking that the girl is using the numbe,”the police said, refusing to divulge more information.

“We are also gathering information from the girl to know whether she knows the accused,” they added.

The police have registered the case and booked the accused under section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) and section 66 (computer related offences) of the Information Technology Act, and for extortion, criminal intimidation and stalking. Further investigations are on.
