On Accident Free Day' Chennai police book 4,490 cases

2,887 cases of driving without helmet were registered.

Chennai: Sunday was observed as an "accident free day" by the city police for creating awareness and ensuring public safety on the roads. Only three minor accidents were reported yesterday. "Only 3 accidents were reported till 6.30 pm. On a regular day there would 25 to 30 accidents daily in the city," a senior police officer noted.

During the day, police conducted a special drive against traffic violations, 560 cases of over speeding and rash driving and 2,887 cases of driving without helmet were registered. Totally 4,490 cases of traffic violations were booked on Sunday.

According to the police, from 8 am to 6.30 pm, more than 2,000 police personnel from traffic, law and order, besides armed reserve police were deployed at 240 locations for intense vehicle checks.

As part of the campaign, traffic awareness slogans were announced through public address systems besides distributing pamphlets and encouraging public to be part of the signature campaign.
