Mangaluru: Rowdy assaults cop, shot at, arrested

Mangaluru: Mangaluru police opened fire at a rowdy sheeter on Thursday late night after he tried to resist arrest and attack the police.

Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil said the rowdy has been identified as Gowrish and the incident took place at Jeppinamogaru.

He is an accused in six cases, including three for murder. Gowrish has been convicted in a murder case in Kavoor police station limits.

"Of late he has been threatening people and extorting money. We received a complaint regarding this on Wednesday and a police team went to arrest him. Gowrish attacked a head constable with dagger. In self defence the police fired and injured his leg. He has been arrested," the Commissioner said.

The head constable, who sustained injuries in the attack, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru. Gowrish too is being treated for bullet injury.
