Bengaluru: Family attempts suicide in front of Vidhana Soudha, arrested

The forest officer had promised compensation, but they have not paid anything even after 10 years.

Bengaluru: A three-member family has been taken into custody by the police when they protested in front of Vidhana Soudha and threatened to immolate themselves on Friday morning.

The family, including Ashwatha Reddy, a farmer from Ragehalli, his wife Nagarathna and their son Sanjay Reddy, a ninth standard student, demanding justice in a 10-year-old case.

The family arrived with two litres of diesel and placards demanding justice in connection with a case involving a senior retired official from forest department. Before they could pour diesel on themselves, the security personnel stopped them and later handed over to the police.

Reddy told police that a former Assistant Conservator of Forest had ordered for cutting of a big tree near Bannerghatta without proper sanction around 10 years back.

Reddy claimed that he along with four others was cutting the tree when an accident happened which left Reddy and his co workers injured. He said that one of the workers succumbed a few days later.

The forest officer had promised compensation, but they have not paid anything even after 10 years.

In frustration the family decided to commit suicide in protest on the Vidhan Soudha premisesl.

Vidhana Saudha police have booked a case of attempt to suicide against Reddy and his family.
