Bengaluru: Jewellery heist foxes police

Crime scene sprinkled with chilly powder, no fingerprints found.

BENGALURU: In a sensational heist a gang of robbers broke into a jewellery shop by drilling a hole through the wall and decamped with over one kg gold jewellery and silver articles in Rajagopalanagar police limits early Tuesday. Police said a gang of two to three members broke into Mahalakshmi jewellery and even covered their tracks, thereby making their task difficult.

Rajagopalanagar police, who were informed about the theft around 4.30 am, reached the spot with sniffer squad and FSL experts. But they could not make any headway as the gang members had sprinkled chilly powder all over to mislead the investigations.

According to the police, the shop is located near Laggere Circle and there is a vacant piece of land, around half acre, behind it. “The gang members have drilled through the back of the wall to gain access inside the shop. There were also iron-grills inside and the gang members managed to even break them. They then overpowered Jagadish, a staff member who was sleeping inside and tied his hands and legs and assaulted him when he tried to raise an alarm. Police are verifying Jagadish’s background also. He was working with the Channa Ram, the jewellery shop owner, for the last two years,” said a senior police officer.

Investigations further revealed that the gang members knew that the shop had no CCTV camera and burglary alarm. Prima facie it appears that they stole around 1 kilogram of gold and silver jewellery. Fingerprints experts had a hard time as the seasoned robbers not only left any finger prints behind.

The police team is now scouring the CCTV footage available from the area to get hints regarding the identity of the thieves. Rajagopalanagar police have registred a case and begun investigation.
