Sindhu Menon's brother held for swindling bank
BENGALURU: Actor Sindhu Menon’s brother was arrested on Saturday for hatching an intricate plot to swindle a bank of Rs 36 lakh. Sindhu and her sister Sudha too are accused, but they don’t have any role in the fraud, the police said.
Sindhu’s brother Manoj Karthikeyan Varma had taken the loan from Bank of Baroda by producing fake documents, purportedly to buy an Audi car. But instead of buying the car, he transferred the money to the accounts of Nagashree Shivanna, the other arrested person, and Sindhu and Sudha.
The bank manager got suspicious after Manjoj failed to submit the car documents to the bank and refused to repay the loan. When the bank served Manoj a notice, he went underground. The police have booked the two under various sections of the IPC, including 420 (cheating).
Sindhu has reportedly shifted to London after her marriage. The police have asked her to appear for questioning. Sindhu, a multilingual star, started her career in the
Kannada film industry and then shifted to Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil movies. She has worked in more than 40 films so far.
The police said that Manoj did not have any intention of either buying the car or repaying the loan.
He hatched the plot as he wanted to repay the money taken from his sisters. Of the loan amount, he transferred Rs 15 lakh to Sindhu, another Rs 15 lakh to Nagashree, Rs 1 lakh to Sudha and the rest Rs 5 lakh he had kept in his account.
After verifying his bank transactions, the bank manager filed the police complaint against all the four as the money had been transferred to their accounts.
The police confirmed that Sindhu is not involved in the fraud, but has been asked to appear for questioning.
