Hyderabad: Official held in scholarship scam

During the investigation, police found the money was transferred to the bank account of Sai Vikas Degree College.

Hyderabad: The police has arrested a sub-treasury officer from Nalgonda treasuries and accounts department in connection with a scholarship scam. Earlier, the cops had arrested two treasury officials in connection with the scam, in which Rs 71 lakh was diverted from government scholarship funds. The suspect is Gangula Purushottam Reddy, 42, a sub-treasury officer at the Nalgonda collectorate.

“The Rs 71 lakh was supposed to be deposited in the accounts of over 40 colleges across the state. But, the suspect and two others, who were arrested earlier, conspired with officials from a college and transferred the money to their own accounts. They planned to share the money,” said inspector Chand Basha of the cyber crime police station.

During the investigation, police found the money was transferred to the bank account of Sai Vikas Degree College. The suspects accessed the official server of the DTA and tampered with documents to divert the funds.

The police received a complaint from senior officials of DTA who suspected money swindling by insiders. Investigation officials said the probe is still on and more people will be arrested soon in connection with the case.
