First year engineering student commits suicide in Chennai

The student jumped into a well which was situated in his college premises.

Chennai: An 18-year-old first year engineering student on Friday allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well situated in his college premises here, police said.

T Abinath was spotted sitting on the well Friday morning by a college employee. When the staffer told him to get off from the spot, he replied that he would do so but just after the conversation, he jumped into the well.

Abinath, who lived in the college hostel, belonged to Perambalur district. The college is situated in a city suburb off Tambaram.

"He had arrears and it appears he was depressed and confused. He seems to have been interested in studying medicine. We are looking into the incident," Kundrathur Police Inspector Ruben said.

"We have registered a case. The body was fished out of the well by Fire and Rescue personnel and it has been sent to the Government Chromepet General Hospital for autopsy," he said, adding that the student's parents have arrived here.

The suicide comes close on the heels of similar incidents involving students, including three girls of a Naturopathy College in Villupuram District recently.
