Hyderabad: Inspector involved in assaulting cops yet to be suspended

HYDERABAD: The Rachakonda police officials have submitted a formal report along with the FIR of the case involving an Inspector, Guntrapally Raju, from Hyderabad’s South Zone assaulting and abusing an on-duty cop in Vanasthalipuram on November 3, to the city police chief. Meanwhile, Hyderabad police officials said that there will be disciplinary action against the Inspector and he would be placed under suspension. The Inspector was detained and later released.

Officials from the Rachakonda Police said that a formal report has been sent to the Hyderabad city Police Commissioner CV Anand by the Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat. “Whenever a government servant is involved in a criminal case, a formal report of the incident is submitted to the unit head to take action against the official,” a senior official explained.

On the night of November 3, Inspector of South Zone’s control room, Guntrapally Raju, was followed to an isolated place in Vanasthalipuram by his wife, who allegedly caught him cheating on her with another woman in his car. Upon hearing the commotion between the couple, the woman and noticing their two children at the scene, the local Vanasthalipuram police patrol intervened, following which the Inspector assaulted and injured them and further refused to undergo a breathalyser test, leading to his detention and arrest.

According to the Vanasthalipuram Inspector, K. Satyanarayana, Police Constables Ramakrishna and Nagarjuna Naidu were on their night patrol duty when they intervened in the commotion. Inspector Raju’s wife alleged that he had been in an illicit relationship and that she had caught him along with an unidentified woman while they were engaged in a sexual act in the interior of Sagar Complex in Vanasthalipuram.

“When confronted by the two constables, Inspector Raju began abusing and hitting them. As a result of the assault, Ramakrishna sustained injuries on his face. Further, when head constable Venu Gopal reached the spot to shift the Inspector to the Traffic Police Station to undergo a breathalyser test, he resisted and abused the constable,” said the police, adding that the Raju was taken into custody and booked under sections 353 ( Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 427 (Mischief causing damage) and 332 ( Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the IPC for assault on duty officers.

“He allegedly told his wife that he has to tend to an urgent duty and left home in his car, bearing the number AP 29 BX 6449. Suspecting something odd about his behaviour, his wife followed to an isolated place near Sagar Complex in Vanasthalipuram and caught him with another woman in his car,” sources said.

Raju is a 2002 batch officer who has served as Detective Inspector in several places in the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate and was also taking part in the recent Munugode by-elections bandobast duty.

In the first half of this year, nine officials were placed under suspension in the city for reasons ranging from allegations of misconduct, corruption, involving in civil matters, moral turpitude, intimidation of a complainant, negligence towards their legitimate duties in the control of narcotics in pubs and bars, dereliction of duty and corruption in the investigation of double murder of realtors, apart from case of CCS Rachakonda, wherein Inspector Devender was caught using the debit card of a businessman in jail and withdrawing over Rs. 5.5 lakh from different ATMs.

The Hyderabad Police alone has dismissed over 55 officers and personnel in different ranks in a major disciplinary action. The dismissed include several who were suspended, terminated or issued compulsory retirement over complaints against them between December 2021 and October 7, 2022.
