Kasargod: A judicial first class magistrate, who was suspended for allegedly assaulting police officers in an inebriated state in Sullia near Mangalore, was found hanging at his official residence in Kasargod on Wednesday morning.

According to Vidyanagar police, the judicial officer Unnikrishnan V.K. ,48, was declared dead-on-arrival at the hospital. Following the two cases filed by Sullia police against him on Sunday for the alleged misconduct, the Kerala High Court had suspended Unnikrishnan.

According to Sullia (Karnataka) police, Unnikrishnan assaulted an autorickshaw driver and when he was later brought to Sullia police station, assaulted officers there too.

However, after he was released following an undertaking, the judicial officer reached Kasargod and got himself admitted in a hospital with ‘multiple external injuries’. He had said that the Sullia police brutally assaulted him and denied all charges. The doctors had confirmed the injuries.

Unnikrishnan, who took charge in Kasargod two months ago, did not inform the chief judicial magistrate before leaving the state, which was an offence. On Wednesday morning, when his relative went out to buy breakfast, he locked himself in and hanged himself, the police said.

A native of Vazhapilly in Thrissur, Unnikrishnan is survived by wife and two children. The body was sent for post-mortem at Pariyaram Medical College.
