AIADMK councillor hacked to death
Chennai: A sitting AIADMK councillor of Tiruttani Municipality in neighbouring Thiruvallur district was hacked to death by a gang which came in an auto rickshaw early on Sunday morning.
The gang intercepted the victim’s car and did him to death. Police identified the deceased as Shanmugham (42), a resident of Sannidhi street. He was into real estate business and also ran a packaged drinking water unit in the same neighbourhood.
After his morning walk on Sunday he went to his packaged drinking water unit in Indira Nagar to pick up his car which was parked there. As he was returning in his car, an auto rickshaw intercepted him. Armed men surrounded his car.
Though Shanmugham tried to steer his car around the assailants, the gang members damaged the windshield and sprinkled chilli powder on his face.
As soon as he stopped the car, the assailants dragged him out and hacked him to death before escaping from the scene. It took some time for the local residents to notice the murder and informed the police as the killing took place in an isolated area.
The body was later shifted to GH for post mortem. Police revealed that 10 days ago a gang had tried to kill Shanmugham near the Tiruttani bus stand, but an alert public had not only prevented the murder but also nabbed one of the gang members.
“It is possible that the same gang had executed the murder on Sunday morning. Apart from political enemies, Shanmugham’s rivals in business are also in the list of suspects,” police said. Shanmugham was a councillor in his second consecutive term and was getting ready to file nomination for the third time for the local body election representing AIADMK.
