Thiruvananthapuram: A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will be coming down this week to quiz a West Bengal native held by the state cyber police in connection with the online cheating of Rs 8.5 lakh from a Malayali woman working as a maid in Singapore.
According to cyber police sources, the bank accounts of the accused Amit Bhattacharje, 34, were under the surveillance of the NIA for quite some time owing to shady transactions, including international transactions.
The state cyber police had so far got details of seven bank accounts of the accused. All the accounts have similar names. Fake documents are suspected to have been used to open these accounts.
Apart from the Rs 8.5 lakh deposited by the maid, who hailed from Anchuthengu near Attingal, several other deposits were also found to be made in these accounts in the recent past.
Cyber police sources said that Amit was remanded to judicial custody. A five-day police custody of Amit was sought for further interrogation. A NIA team from New Delhi has informed that they would be coming down to quiz him.
“As of now we do not have clear information of Amit's exact background or any terror links. But he has been under the NIA scanner owing to the suspicious transactions in his bank account. He claimed that he had studied only up to tenth standard. Some other persons are also suspected to be associated with him in the crimes,” said a Cyber police official.
A police team comprising cyber police circle inspector Vinod Kumar P.V. nabbed Amit from Paikpara, about 50 kilometres from Kolkata, after tracking him. Cyber police DySP M. Iqbal was supervising the probe.
