Thiruvananthapuram: Three found guilty in Ruby Nagar murder

Thiruvananthapuram: Three men were found guilty in the murder of 22-year old Sayed Ali at Ruby Nagar in Chalai here on September 6, 2010.It was a daylight revenge killing that rocked the city. The Thiruvananthapuram additional district and sessions court - VI judge P. N. Seetha pronounced the judgement. The quantum of the sentence will be decided on Monday.

Mr Ali, a Vallakadavu native residing at Kalipankulam here, was an accused in the murder of one Sathar at a bar hotel in Injackal in 2008.

To take revenge, his relatives murdered Mr Ali. The convicted are Sulaiman Street resident Sajeer alias Habeeb, 29, his brother Rafeek, 24, and Vallakadavu resident Hussain Abbas, 25.

The first defendant, Shefeek, died during the trial. Apart from murder, the three were also found guilty of illegal detention, use of weapons, attack on women and criminal conspiracy.

The prosecution case was that Mr Ali was shopping at Ruby Nagar along with his sister Nabeesath and niece Mehirjan around 2 p.m. They stabbed, chased and bashed him using soda bottles until confirming his death. Ms Nabeesath also sustained injuries.

Public prosecutor M. Salahudeen said though there were nine eyewitnesses, except Ms Nabeesath and Mehirjan, all turned hostile during the trial.Though the fourth accused Rafeek made a plea of alibi, he could not prove it.

Present DySP (intelligence) Abdul Rahim and city control-room assistant commissioner V. Suresh Kumar probed the case and filed charge sheet while serving at the Fort police station. Blood stains in the dress and weapons used by the accused were crucial evidence.

There were 34 prosecution witnesses, 92 documents and 21 material evidence in the case.
