UP: Dalit girl denied water at temple, father attacked with trishul
New Delhi: A 13-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly denied drinking water by a priest at a temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.
The incident took place on Sunday evening when Charan Singh and his daughter Sudha Kumari, had gone to collect fodder on the village outskirts, said reports.
The girl went to a temple in search of water, where the priest and his assistant allegedly made casteist remarks against her and prevented her from drinking water.

After the girl’s father confronted the priest, he allegedly attacked the father with a trident (trishul).
A case has reportedly been registered against the accused under SC/ST Act and he has been taken into custody.
According to reports, ASP, Sambhal, Kamlesh Dixit said a case had been registered under section 323, 324 of the IPC and under the SC/ST Act at Gunnaur police station.
The incident comes in the backdrop of a number of attacks on Dalits throughout the country, mainly for allegedly consuming or storing beef. The issue has led to an uproar in Parliament and to mass protests by Dalits.
