Hyderabad: An woman engineer is battling for life after her friend from Nellore slit her throat with a knife at a lodge in Chaitanyapuri on Tuesday before attempting suicide.

The victim V. Manasvini, 22, of Badangpet, was undergoing coaching for competitive examinations at Chaitanyapuri after completing her engineering when she came in contact with the accused J. Venkatesh, 23, a native of Nellore. The duo stayed in touch over the phone.

Venkatesh arrived in the city on Tuesday and, at about 10 am, checked-in at a lodge which he had booked online. He asked Manasvini to meet him there. She arrived at about 10.45 am, and went to Venkatesh’s room.

After some time, Venkatesh attacked Manasvini with a knife, causing a severe bleeding injury to her throat. He then cut his left wrist.

Chaitanyapuri detective inspector N. Ramu said, “During the argument, Manasvini sent her location to her brother through WhatsApp.

“It was only after his arrival at the lodge that the incident came to light. Manasvini’s brother along with the hotel staff broke open the door and found her in a pool of blood on the bed and the accused in the bathroom,” Mr Ramu said.

Manasvini suffered a deep cut to her throat and is undergoing treatment at Omni Hospital in LB Nagar.

Dr P. Sreekar, a senior plastic surgeon at Omni Hospital, said, “Surgery was performed on her, but she is in a critical state. She is currently on the ventilator.” The accused was admitted to Osmania General Hospital and is stated to be out of danger.

"It is learnt that Manasvini had been avoiding Venkatesh for some time. Irked by this, he attempted to kill the girl and then himself. A case of attempt to murder has been registered for the probe,” the inspector said.
