Chennai: Gold worth Rs 63.7 lakh seized by customs sleuths at airport

One kg gold valued at Rs 35.74 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Ac 1962. The passenger was arrested.

Chennai: Customs officials at the Chennai international airport detected on Tuesday, three cases of smuggling of gold and seized Rs 63.7 lakh worth gold.

According to airport sources, on Tuesday, air intelligence unit officers intercepted two passengers, Toulath Ali (30) of Ramnad and Nazeer Ahmed (44) of Madurai who arrived from Colombo by an Indigo flight on suspicion of carrying gold. On their personal search, nine gold bundles were found concealed in their rectum.

Gold weighing 779 grams valued at Rs 28 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962. One passenger was arrested on the basis of his earlier offence.

In another case on Tuesday and on a specific tip-off, officers intercepted Tajudeen Bin Farook (50) of Malaysia who arrived from Kuala Lumpur via Delhi by Indigo Airlines at the domestic terminal of the Chennai airport. Examination of his check-in baggage resulted in recovery of gold weighing 796 grams. Gold weighing 204 grams was found concealed inside the transformer of a table fan, motor portion of the ceiling fan, inside the speakers of the keyboard and AC/DC portable boom box and also inside bolts meant for a TV wall cabinet.
