The police said the accused were transporting the money in two plastic gunny bags in a luggage autorickshaw.

Bengaluru: In yet another case of black money conversion, six people, including a lawyer and an engineer, were arrested with Rs 2.8 crore in demonetised currency notes by the Mico Layout police.

The accused have been identified as advocate K.B. Marireddy (60), a resident of Domlur, S. Dinesh (30), a resident of BTM Layout 2nd stage, Bhanuji (59) from Chittoor district, R Harish (50), a resident of Yelahanka, Chandrashekar (60), a resident of Tavarekere, and Dinesh (40), a resident of Banashankari. The prime accused, Ramesh, is absconding.

The police said the accused were transporting the money in two plastic gunny bags in a luggage autorickshaw. To avoid suspicion, they had also kept an LPG cylinder, tender coconuts and other stuff on in other gunny bags, and closely followed the auto in their two-wheelers. Based on a tipoff, the police arrested the accused and seized the money on Thursday evening.

It was revealed during the investigation that of the Rs 2.8 crore in scrapped currency notes, Rs 2.2 crore was counterfeit which they were supposed to deliver to a woman. “The woman is yet to be traced and questioned,” police said. In the last week, police have seized Rs 13 crore in scrapped currency and arrested 24 people for allegedly trying to exchange these notes.
