Hyderabad: Man, son in soup over dog torture

Animal rights activists said that killing the dog was a heinous act and the persons responsible should be punished strictly.

Hyderabad: Hayatnagar police on Monday registered a case against a man and his 15-year-old son for allegedly killing a dog that had bit the boy and for dragging its body tied to a bicycle.

Animal rights activists said that killing the dog was a heinous act and the persons responsible should be punished strictly according to the law.

Animal rights activist Ms Priyanka, a resident of Injapur in Hayatnagar, said that on Monday afternoon, when she and her husband had gone to Bhagyalatha Colony to purchase provisions, they found Venkanna and his 15-year-old son dragging a female dead dog on the road, tied to their bicycle.

When she tried to stop them, they allegedly abused her, which later led to an argument. “In a short while a crowd gathered at the spot and were supporting them without having any pity on the dead animal,” Ms Priyanka said.

Police rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd. Activists, meanwhile, said that the dog was a community dog and was friendly with the local residents, but the accused had harassed it.

“The ‘V’ notch on the tip of the dog’s ear proved that it was vaccinated and operated for birth control and rabies, that means it was a safe dog and not harmful to the public, but still they killed it brutally,” said Ms Pravalika, who is an honorary animal welfare officer of the Ministry of Environ-ment, Forest and Climate Change.

Sources said that the dog bit the boy while he was playing and his father beat it, resulting in its death.

A case for killing an animal and under Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act and Animal Birth Control Act has been registered against Venkanna and his son.

“We have preserved the body for autopsy and are verifying the facts. Based on the investigation, we will proceed,” said Hayatnagar inspector Mr J. Narender Goud.
