Telangana: 2 held with 53-kg of Agarwood

The wood was concealed in the checked-in luggage. The value of the wood was estimated at Rs 32.8 lakh.

Hyderabad: Customs officials arrested two passengers and seized 53 kg of aromatic agarwood that they were smuggling to Riyadh, at the Shamshabad airport on Sunday.On suspicion, Customs officials intercepted the two passengers and screened their luggage. The wood was concealed in the checked-in luggage. The value of the wood was estimated at Rs 32.8 lakh.

Agarwood is a fragrant dark resinous wood used in incense and perfume. It is formed when Aquilaria trees are infected with a type of mould and release a an aromatic resin. Since 1995, Aquilaria trees have been listed as a potentially threatened species due to the threats it faces.
