Armed gang raids train in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Train robbers attacked the Secunderabad-bound Narayanadri Express on Friday midnight. There were no casualties but passengers’ valuables were looted by the gang.
Railway police said that a Ralway Protection Force (RPF) team guarding the train opened fire but the dacoits managed to flee. The gang fired back at the police.
At least three coaches of the train were raided during the incident. It’s believed that the train stopped after someone pulled the chain. A total of 130 grams of gold ornaments were robbed from women passengers.
The incident occurred while the train was passing between Raparla and Ongole. Three passengers filed a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Secunderabad, who registered a criminal case and transferred it to the police in Prakasam district. Passengers maintain that they heard multiple gunshots fired by both the police and the robbers.
“The robbers simultaneously raided coaches S1, S8, and S13. Some 15 robbers entered the train,” Secunderabad Railway police officials said.
Cops suspect the gang might be from Uttar Pradesh or Bihar as they were armed with country-made guns.
Ongole railway police inspector K. Venkateswarlu said the monetary loss could have been much higher if the police personnnel on the train had not opened fire immediately after they realised that a robbery was in progress.
