Chennai: Gang attacks couple, flees with belongings

The couple handed over Rs 4,000, a 1.5 sovereigns gold chain and a mobile phone.

Chennai: A gang attacked and robbed two college students of all their valuables near Surapet in Ambattur on Friday.

Two college students studying in a private college in Maduravoyal had travelled to the banks of Puzhal lake after bunking college on Saturday morning. They had been sitting and talking while five unidentified men sneaked up on them and attacked them, sources said. Balamanikandan, 20, a resident of Thirumal Nagar in Kolathur, was wounded in the attack and sustained injuries on the head. Sensing that they were afraid and would do anything, the gang threatened them to hand over all their valuables.

The couple handed over Rs 4,000, a 1.5 sovereigns gold chain and a mobile phone. The gang immediately fled threatening them of dire consequences, if they lodge a formal complaint .

Based on the complaint lodged by Balamanikandan, the Ambattur police registered a case and began a hunt for the gang. Balamanikandan said that the gang were not bike-borne and are likely to be locals as they were walking around. CCTV footage available in the area are being combed through to track the identity of the men.
