Two held near Ernakulam South railway station with banned drugs

The arrested were identified as Manikumar (24), a native of Theni, and Muraleedharan (49), a resident of Niraipandian Kovil Compound.

Kochi: The Excise sleuths on Friday arrested two Tamil Nadu natives from near Ernakulam South railway station and seized 327 pills of banned psychotropic drug brought here for sale among college students.

The arrested were identified as Manikumar (24), a native of Theni, and Muraleedharan (49), a resident of Niraipandian Kovil Compound.

The duo was held by an Excise team led by Circle Inspector T.S. Sasikumar while acting on a tip off that a racket was smuggling in Phenobarbital drug from Madurai to sell it among college students in the city.

“The racket was selling Phenobarbital drugs which give the same effect of that of banned nitrazepam, now very difficult to get. During interrogation, the accused admitted to charge '10,000 to '30,000 from students for a strip containing 30 pills. The anti-epileptic drug, if used without the prescription of a doctor and in excess amount, can affect the nervous system,” Sasikumar said.

The duo was booked under relevant sections of the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. A further probe is on to trace other members of the racket.
