Chennai: Aswini had filed complaint against stalker

Assailant tried to forcibly tie thali making victim, kin go to police last month.

Chennai: The teenage victim who was murdered had filed a harassment complaint against her assailant last month at Maduravoyal police station.

Police sources said that Aswini and her family members had filed a complaint on February 16 against Alagesan after he attempted to tie a thali (mangal sutra) to her forcibly.

According to police sources, Aswini gave a written complaint saying that she ended the relationship, but he kept harassing her.

“Since the girl’s family did not want to file an FIR as it would affect her future, we warned the man sternly and let him off,” a senior police officer said.

Aswini too was residing with her family in Maduravoyal and had shifted to Jafferkhanpet to stay with her relatives after the incident. She had also not attended classes for two weeks after filing the complaint and returned to college only two days ago, police said.

Aswini was bought up by her mother, M. Sankari, after the death of her husband, Mohan, a construction worker. An uncontrollable Sankari pleaded for justice at the government multi-speciality hospital where her daughter’s body was kept for an autopsy.

“I brought up my daughter by working as a domestic help at several houses. Should she die like this? He (the assailant) should be brought to task,” Sankari told mediapersons.

Meanwhile, a tense situation prevailed at Loganathan Street, where residents and college students expressed shock at what transpired in the otherwise quiet neighbourhood. “A crowd had gathered in the area after learning what had happened and we had to deploy force to control the crowd,” a police officer said.
