Hyderabad: Two more held in bribery case

Houses of suspects searched, CBI seizes Rs 5 lakh from their residences.

Hyderabad: Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested two more people in the Central Excise tax evasion bribery case on Thursday. CBI sources said that two Central Excise inspectors, K. Naga Prasad and D. Tata Rao, were arrested for scheming with the superintendent of Central Excise and Customs, and taking a share in the bribe amount.

Earlier on Tuesday, the CBI, arrested superintendent Singam Gopala Krishna Murthy, who demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to cover up the tax evasion of a company named KM Plastics at Katedan.

The bribe giver, Jagadish Prasad, was also arrested while he was paying the second instalment of the bribe. The CBI searched the houses of inspectors Naga Prasad and Tata Rao and seized Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively.

CBI sources said the accused Central Excise inspectors accepted the bribe along with the superintendent. “The accused told KM Plastics owner that he had evaded tax, and had to pay either Rs 25 lakh legally, or Rs 10 lakh as bribe,” the sources said.
