Hyderabad: 3 phone thieves escape custody

The three were allowed to go out and relieve themselves. After that they ran away from the police station while cops on duty were asleep.

Hyderabad: Three college dropouts who were arrested by Ghatkesar police in a mobile phone theft case escaped from custody early on Thursday. The three, aged around 20, were allowed to go out and relieve themselves.

After that they ran away from the police station while the cops were asleep. The incident occurred a few hours before they were supposed to be produced in court.

An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Teams have been formed to track down the suspects. The three Rohith, Uday and Mahesh and two others, hailing from Ghatkesar village, were involved in a mobile phone theft at a dhaba in Ghatkesar.

They were caught by locals and handed over to police. Police registered a case, and after recording statements arrested and kept them in custody. As question papers of SSC and Intermediate examination were kept in the lock-up, the suspects were kept in another room in the police station.

Around 2.30 am, when they wanted to relieve themselves, the constable on duty allowed two of them to go out. But when the first two men did not return, the constable sent the third man to check and he also did not come back. Later, they realised that the trio had hoodwinked them and ran away.

Meanwhile, Malkaj-giri ACP G. Sandeep Kumar said they were accompanied by the guard when they went out to relieve themselves and they had returned to the police station.

After coming inside, they jumped through an open window and ran away. “An inquiry is underway and a detailed report will be submitted to higher officials. Our teams have also launched a manhunt to track down the suspects,” the ACP said.

Sources said police caught Mahesh while he was about to board a train at a nearby railway station.
