KASARGOD: A girl student of a private college in Mangaluru attempted to commit suicide for failure in internal examination. It is learnt that the girl, a native of Kozhikode, attempted to end her life by cutting her veins on Tuesday night. She alleged that the college management had deliberately tried to fail her for financial gain. The girl is a sixth semester (Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology) students at M.V. Shetty College of Speech and Hearing. Following the incident, the students boycotted the class and are continuing their protest.

According to sources, the girl won in all examinations except one practical exam in fifth semester which is directly conducted by the college. The college authorities told her that she cannot write the sixth semester exam according to Mangalore University rules until she clears the “failed subject” (year back). The girl attempted to commit suicide after hearing it. A section of students alleged that 18 students were “failed” by the college in order to collect money in the form of additional college fee.

The college management denied the accusation and promised that management representative, who had earlier met students and received a memorandum, would conduct talks on Thursday evening. However, no one turned up for the talks. It is learnt that the management representatives would hold talks on Friday after getting University’s direction on the issue. Meanwhile, the girl is recovering at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
