Hyderabad: Police busted a robbery gang and arrested seven people including a woman and a B.Com student on Wednesday. The gang had entered the house of Ratan Devi at Malakpet, tied her up and tried to loot valuables on February 29.

Police said the woman gangster knocked on the door and told the victim that she wanted to discuss a wedding proposal for her cousin. When she opened the door, others entered the house and tied up the woman. The mastermind was B.Com student Priyam Toshniwal, 20, from Saleemnagar. He was a relative of the victim.

“Priyam knew the victim’s husband had died and she was living with her children. The gang assumed that she will be alone in the afternoon,” a police officer said. Once inside the house, Saurabh Agarwal, 20, from Gosha Mahal and his mother Rekha Agarwal, 41, and others tied up the victim and searched for valuables. Then, Ratan Devi’s son, Yash, 17, who was in the washroom, came out. Seeing him, the gang fled.

The gang entered the house without making any noise to avoid the attention of neighbours. “Around 1.30 pm, Ratan Devi was taking rest. Rekha Agarwal knocked on the door and said “Shant (cousin of Ratan Devi) ki shadi ke enquiry ke liye aaye hai.”

When she opened the door, Rekha came inside and said her ‘husband’ was also with her. Within seconds, three men came in. Two of them pounced on the woman. One caught hold of the woman’s neck, while another took out a tape and covered her mouth, face and neck. One of the men went to the bedroom to take valuables.

“Yash tried to catch the woman, but she pushed him away and fled through the open door along with others,” said G. Ramesh, additional inspector. All the accused were sent to judicial custody.
