Chennai: Police on Friday arrested a 32-year-old man for murdering his differently abled elder sister at their residence in Palavanthangal on Thursday night after an argument. The deceased was identified as B. Shanthi (39). An unmarried woman, Shant, was physically disabled by birth and also has a mental disability, police sources said. Shanthi lived with her mother in Bhaktavatchalam Nagar in Pazhavanthangal in one portion while her brother Shankar (32) lived with his family in the adjacent portion.

Shankar runs a rubber stamp vending store in the same area. Police investigations revealed that the siblings used to get into frequent quarrels over the woman’s behaviour. “Shanti used to shoot off her mouth and scold her brother and his wife often which led to a lot of arguments in the house,” a police officer said. On Thursday, after an argument, Shanti allegedly attacked Shankar, which enraged him. Around 8 pm, Shankar returned with a wire rope and strangled his sister. He left the place after she fell unconscious.

Their mother, who rushed hearing her screams moved her to a private hospital nearby where doctors declared her brought dead. Pazhavanthangal police rushed to the scene on information and secured the woman’s body and sent it to the Chromepet government hospital for autopsy. The police registered a case of murder and arrested Shankar. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
